02 / READ THE HAND

Three hand types. Different decisions.

Your total alone is not enough. First identify whether an ace is counted as 11, or whether the hand is a pair. Then find the dealer’s face-up card across the chart.

Hard total

10♠6♥= 16

A hard hand has no ace counted as 11. An ace may still be present: A + 7 + 9 is hard 17 because the ace must count as 1 to avoid busting.

Soft total

A♠7♥= 18

A soft hand contains an ace counted as 11. A + 7 is soft 18. If a later card forces that ace to count as 1, reassess the hand rather than continuing to use the old soft row.

A pair

8♠8♥= 8,8

Two matching ranks have a separate splitting row. N means “do not split”, not “stand”. For example, 5,5 remains a hard 10; you still need the total row to decide the next action.

Read a cell in this order
  1. Identify the hand and any available surrender option.
  2. Find the matching row and the dealer’s upcard.
  3. Read the symbol, including its fallback or asterisk.
  4. Check that the table permits the action before choosing it.

Find 12 under Hard totals, then move across to the dealer’s 3. The FS777 sheet shows H. Against a dealer 4, the same row changes to S: the upcard matters.

Use A,7 in Soft totals. Ds has its own fallback: if doubling is unavailable, stand. Do not confuse it with D, which says to hit when doubling is unavailable.

Y* · Check the split rule

The 6,6 row shows Y*. Split only when Double After Split is offered. If it is not, return to the hard-total row: two sixes make 12, and 12 against 2 shows H.

SUR · If late surrender is offered

For this non-pair hand, the Late surrender section shows SUR. If that option is unavailable, follow Hard totals instead: 16 against 10 shows H. A pair of eights has its own row.

04 / BEFORE THE FIRST HAND

The table rules come first

A live dealer does not make a chart more accurate. What matters is the game’s rules. Open the table’s rules panel before you use any strategy sheet, whether the cards are dealt on camera or by software.

Soft 17 & deck count

H17 means the dealer hits soft 17; S17 means the dealer stands. Those games can call for different player decisions. The number of decks also matters, so do not assume a single-deck table uses the same chart as a multi-deck game.

Doubling & splitting

Check which totals may double, whether doubling after a split is allowed, and how many times a hand may be split. Aces can have extra restrictions. On this sheet, Y* specifically depends on Double After Split (DAS).

Surrender & dealer checks

Late surrender gives up the hand for half the original stake after the dealer-blackjack check, when offered. It is not available at every table. Dealer peek and no-hole-card rules also affect which strategy applies.

Payouts & special variants

Read the blackjack payout and any extra fees or multiplier rules. Lightning and other special blackjack versions can change payouts or charge additional stakes. Side bets have separate rules and are not decisions covered by this sheet.

What the chart cannot promise

Basic strategy concerns the decision on a hand. It does not predict the next card, guarantee a winning session or tell you to increase your stake after a loss. Our sheet also advises against insurance and even money; those are separate choices from playing the main hand.

Before you save the chart

What is the difference between D and Ds?

Both mean double if the table permits it. When doubling is unavailable, D means hit and Ds means stand. The fallback is part of the instruction.

Does Y* mean I must double after splitting?

No. Y* says to split only if the table allows Double After Split. It does not tell you to double every resulting hand; each new hand still needs its own decision.

Can I use this at every live blackjack table?

No. Live describes how the game is presented, not a single set of rules. Check soft 17, decks, doubling, surrender and any special payouts before selecting a strategy.

How do I print the chart?

Download the PDF and choose “Fit to page” in your print settings. The original sheet is a tall one-page document, so a small paper size makes the cells smaller. Use a larger sheet or your printer’s poster option if you need larger text.

Does blackjack count towards a casino bonus?

Read the particular offer’s terms. A game can contribute less than slots, be excluded from wagering or have a separate stake limit. A strategy chart does not change those bonus rules.
